Optical Engineer - Manufacturing

Des Plaines, Illinois – Movement Search & Delivery   www.movementsearch.com/jobs    is working with a growing, multi-billion dollar manufacturing client with headquarters in Atlanta. Due to their growth, they have a newly created position for an Optical Engineer.

What you will do: The Optical Engineer designs technologies including reflector, TIR, lens, and hybrid systems which are designed and verified using optical and 3D CAD software. The role utilizes forward thinking reflective, refractive and diffusion techniques, provides design collaboration in a cross-functional team atmosphere to develop world class products in an accelerated timeframe while meeting product definitions for performance, quality, reliability and cost effectiveness is a major element of this role. The position collaborates with other on/off site team members as well as vendors, offering the opportunity to contribute to multiple methods of product development.

What you will need: Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics, Optical Engineering or equivalent Engineering discipline. Design knowledge of primarily non-imaging optics, light pipes, color mixing optics and diffusers. Experience with LightTools optical simulation tool or other similar tools. Familiarity with LED vendors and their product line. Hands on design experience in LED/Source selection, connectors, drivers, heat sinks, etc. Understanding of how optics are produced (such as spinning, molding, etc), optic materials and finishing properties, and relative tooling and production costs. Experience in designing optical systems for LED light fixtures. Strong vendor or supplier level experience is needed to insure the company is in line with future industry trends and developments. 2D and 3D design software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks and/or Pro-E). Design and compliance knowledge per LM79, LM80, Energy Star Luminaire Standard, and DLC. Hands on test experience and familiarity with the optical test equipment including Goniophotometers and Integrating Spheres.
